Cardinal Francis George Removes Pfleger from St. Sabina parish

June 3, 2008

A temporary removal that is.

A start but a permanent removal is in order. As in excommunication. I’m sure I am not the only one who feels that way.

The firebrand pastor of St. Sabina parish was removed from his duties there Tuesday, according to a statement released by the Archdiocese of Chicago.

In the statement, Cardinal Francis George says he asked the Rev. Michael Pfleger, 59, to “take leave for a couple of weeks from his pastoral duties.” The statement said Pfleger “does not believe this to be the right step at this time.” “While respecting his disagreement, I have nevertheless asked him to use this opportunity to reflect on his recent statements and actions in the light of the Church’s regulations for all Catholic priests,” George said.

The recent statements in question were video clips broadcast on You Tube where Pfleger mocked Hillary Clinton for crying on the campaign trail. He suggested her tears were due to “white entitlement” leading Clinton to believe the Democratic nomination should go to her, not Barack Obama.

Pfleger has been a priest for 33 years, serving nearly all that time at St.

Sabina’s in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood.[…]

From all appearances Cardinal George is basically making Pfleger sit in the corner for a time out.
But like I said, a start. Better than nothing…

Pfleger apparently does not know when to shut up.
Michael Pfleger: “America Is The Greatest Sin Against God” @ YouTube
Michael Pfleger explains:

“I inadvertently inserted the word ‘America’ in the wrong place and was not even aware of it until right now,” he said. “If you hear the whole phrase, it is evident what I meant and that it was a mix-up of words. Because things are so quickly judged right now and easily misinterpreted, I thought I would put this out to provide clarity.”

I don’t think Fr. Pfleger s/b excommunicated just yet, but I do believe he needs to be “de-programmed”. The Cardinal should insist that he go on a long (several months) retreat in some far away place so he can pray and reflect on the reason he became a priest. I do not believe he is a bad person — only has become mis-guided because of the church where he has served for far tooooooooooo long.

It’s not surprising that you write pathetical drivel when you don’t understand your own title. Irony doesn’t mean blaring out a prejudice. It implies indirection and subtlety. Surrealism is a very specific use of the imagination that startles us with a new truth. It’s not crude sloganizing.
