Indonesia backs sharia law, poll shows
June 24, 2008 The Telegraph UK By Thomas Bell

A majority of Indonesians would like to see Sharia law implemented in their country, a new poll shows, although only a minority favor the harsh measures sometimes associated with the system. The poll of 8,000 people in the world’s most populous Muslim country, home to 200 million Muslims, found that 52 per cent favored some form of Islamic legal code, such as religious arbitration in family disputes. Asked if women should be made to wear a head scarf 45 per cent said yes, while 40 per cent favored chopping off the hands of thieves. Indonesia has traditionally practised a tolerant brand of Islam, although there are some trying to pull the country in a more conservative direction.

July 1, 2008 Inquirer. net Agence France-Presse
LAHORE — A man in a small Pakistani town killed his Danish sister-in-law because he suspected her of having a “bad character”, police Tuesday said. Faisal Bashir shot dead 31-year-old Tahira Bibi, who was of Pakistani origin, local police official Mohammad Shahbaz Cheema told Agence France-Presse. “It’s a case of honor killing as Faisal suspected his brother’s wife had bad character,” Cheema said. He added that police arrested Faisal, his two brothers and father after a complaint by the parents of Tahira, who settled in Kharian after marrying Mohammad Shehbaz 10 years ago.

Officials took away 17 people, from countries including the Philippines, Morocco, India, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq and Syria, amid allegations they had been held captive for eight months.
Italy: Pakistani girl ‘leaps from balcony after refusing arranged marriage’

July 2, 2008

A 15-year-old Pakistani girl was hospitalised after reportedly jumping from a balcony in the northern Italian town of Alessandria. She had refused an arranged marriage with a 16-year-old Pakistani. “My parents had already been in touch with his and told me I would be marrying him. I have nothing against him but I do not love him,” La Stampa called the girl ‘Piccola’ and said medics had operated on fractures to her legs sustained after falling from the family’s balcony onto a roof below. Piccola, who has grown up in Italy, is said to be well integrated here. Neighbours described Piccola and her family as “good, really polite people, all of them.” She wears western-style clothes and has Italian school friends.
Texas Residents Angered by Group’s Distribution of Korans
July 02, 2008 Fox

Some Houston residents are upset after Korans were left on the doorsteps of hundreds of homes in their neighborhood as part of a campaign to educate people about Islam. Residents of Braes Timbers in southwest Houston began finding the holy books two weeks ago. The Korans came with a note saying they had been left by the Book of Signs Foundation, which claims to have distributed 30,000 free copies of the texts to residents throughout the city. “If we went into a Muslim country and left a Bible, we would be in prison and then decapitated a few years later,” Sue Ann Pieri, a resident who chose not to destroy the book, as other neighbors did. Tarick Hussein, the president of Houston’s Council on American-Islamic Relations, (CAIR) told the station he believes the Book of Signs Foundation wants to educate non-Muslims about the religion.
Sharia law SHOULD be used in Britain, says UK’s top judge

Note: The full text of the speech by the Lord Chief Justice (pdf.)

The Lord Chief Justice’s endorsement of Sharia law has already created huge controversy. The most senior judge in England yesterday gave his blessing to the use of sharia law to resolve disputes among Muslims. Lord Chief Justice Lord Phillips said that Islamic legal principles could be employed to deal with family and marital arguments and to regulate finance. He declared: ‘Those entering into a contractual agreement can agree that the agreement shall be governed by a law other than English law.’ But his remarks, which back the informal sharia courts operated by numerous mosques, provoked a barrage of criticism. Lawyers warned that family and marital disputes settled by sharia could disadvantage women or the vulnerable.
Police dogs to wear bootees when searching Muslim homes not to cause offence

July 6, 2008 Times Online UK Stuart MacDonald

Guidelines being drawn up by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) urge awareness of religious sensitivities when using dogs to search for drugs and explosives. The guidelines, to be published this year, were designed to cover mosques but have been extended to include other buildings. Where Muslims object, officers will be obliged to use sniffer dogs only in exceptional cases. Where dogs are used, they will have to wear bootees with rubber soles. “We are trying to ensure that police forces are aware of sensitivities that people can have with the dogs to make sure they are not going against any religious or cultural element within people’s homes. Islamic injunctions warn Muslims against contact with dogs, which are regarded as “unclean”.

Georgia Man from Pakistan Killed his Daughter to Protect Family Honor
July 07, 2008 Fox News

A Georgia man appeared in court Monday on charges he killed his own daughter for disgracing his family. The 54-year-old, who is of Pakistani descent, kept his head down as charges were read, and appeared to have difficulty understanding instructions from the judge, possibly the result of a language barrier. The 25-year-old victim, Sandeela Kanwal, was wed in Pakistan in an arranged marriage. Police said Kanwal hadn’t seen her husband, who lives in Chicago, for months. According to police, there was “friction between father and victim” in the weeks leading up to the killing. Rashid had not spoken to his daughter in more than two months. Police said Rashid was so angered that his daughter planned to divorce her husband that he killed her after a heated argument at the family’s home. Rashid was taken to the Clayton County jail where he reportedly confessed to strangling Kanwal.
Lawsuit filed in Texas could taint UAE’s image in the U.S.
June 16, 2008

WASHINGTON –As a trusted adviser to a member of the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates, Texas businessman Bassam Nabulsi says he safeguarded the sheik’s most important documents: financial records, investment documents, and videotapes showing the sheik torturing people with a cattle prod and a spiked plank. When the business relationship began to deteriorate, Nabulsi says, he also was imprisoned for months and tortured by jailers trying to get the tapes back. Nabulsi is suing for millions he says he is owed for various business deals. He also charges Sheik Issa and other members of the royal family with false imprisonment and with torturing him. Buzbee says he has three other torture videos.
600 Americans believed to be in madrassas in Pakistan!

This is so shocking it’s beyond belief. Madrassas come to America and recruit children.
In a face to face meeting in Islamabad, Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX) urged Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to help free two American citizens from an Islamic religious institution in the Middle East – the type which have been directly linked to the spawn of anti-American terrorism in the region that is the front line of the global war on terror.
