Tire Gauge Industry Inflates Obama’s Campaign Coffers

August 12, 2008

When Barack Obama made this statement was he simply offering an easy energy saving solution?

“There are things that you can do individually though to save energy; making sure your tires are properly inflated, simple thing, but we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups. You could actually save just as much.”
Barack Obama, Springfield, MO, July 30 2008

Or was he in fact repaying a political favor in kind?

Tire-Gauge Industry Pumps Up Obama Campaign Coffers – WIRED

Just when you thought that Big Oil dictated the energy policy of the United States through political contributions, Wired.com has learned that a substantial contributor to the Obama campaign has influenced that candidate’s ideas on energy.

On June 16, 2008, John Zimmerman, chief financial officer of Tomkins, gave nearly $7,000 in campaign contributions to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Lo and behold, nary two months later Obama’s in Springfield, Missouri, suggesting drivers inflate their tires to save gas (and, by the way, curb CO2 emissions). Coincidence? We think not. Does it come as any surprise that Tomkins owns the Syracuse Gauge Company, which bills itself as manufacturing the “largest selection and variety of tools in the United States for filling tires [and] checking tire pressure”?

Of course the mainstream media ignored this development, leaving it to the blogosphere to bring the big money and big pressure of the PSI lobby to light.[…]

Conservatives had a hay day with Obama’s ‘tire pressure’ energy saving solution.
Needless to say, Barack ‘the arrogant one’ Obama was not amused.

Obama Pushes Back on GOP Tire Pressure Attack: “It’s Like These Guys Take Pride in Being Ignorant” – Political Punch

[…]”So now the Republicans are going around – this is the kind of thing they do. I don’t understand it! They’re going around, they’re sending like little tire gauges, making fun of this idea as if this is ‘Barack Obama’s energy plan.’

“Now two points, one, they know they’re lying about what my energy plan is, but the other thing is they’re making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by 3 to 4 percent. It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant.

“You know, they think it is funny that they are making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework. Because this is serious business. Instead of running ads about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears they should go talk to some energy experts and actually make a difference.”[…]

Obama’s “Tire-Pressure” Embarrassment – – Who’s Ignorant Now? – American Sentinel

[…]On August 5, Obama complained that the Republican “Obama Energy Plan” tire gauge gag was “ignorant.” As reported by Reuters, after claiming that his opponents were “lying about what my energy plan is,” as if the tire-gauge thing represented actual policy rather than a humorous campaign ploy, Obama stated, “they are making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by three to four percent . . . . It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant.”

No, Barack; we take pride in knowing some simple math.

I published a critical piece on August 7, Obama’s “Tire-Pressure” Canard – – Why It’s Disingenuous. One of the commenters cited Business Week for the estimate that “The chances of having low tire pressure is 33.3% or 1 in 3 cars on the road.” Great! Now for the math: 3 per cent (the improvement) times .3333 (the percentage of cars needing improvement) = 1 per cent, at best. Obama’s claim is overstated by at least 200%. […]

Krauthammer unleashes bunker-busters on Obama’s energy-less policy – Macsmind

[…]So his position is contradictory, cheap, and political.

And the stuff he said only a week ago in Missouri on Wednesday of last week, if we only inflated our tires it would substitute for all the oil that the Republicans want to drill for is a towering absurdity.

The amount we would save in our tires generously calculated is about 1/200 of what you get from offshore oil alone, and the amount of oil shale is in the West would give us 10,000 years worth of the gasoline saved by inflating our tires.[…]

It appears that Barry hasn’t done his “homework”. Why does he take such “pride in being ignorant”? Shame on him, he is not setting a very good example for the youth of today.
