Russian "Obama" Ice Cream Advert Sparks Outrage

March 26, 2009

What do you all think? Is this ad racist or a creative harmless advertising campaign? It is common knowledge that Barack Obama is half white so… Cultural ‘misunderstandings’ and/or ‘lost in translation’?

Duet Ice-Cream: Obama

Duet Ice-Cream: Obama

A Russian advertising agency has used an image resembling U.S. President Barack Obama to promote a new vanilla-and-chocolate ice cream, drawing the ire of human rights groups who said the ad was vulgar.

Ice Cream Plant No. 3 in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg launched last week a new brand named “Duet.”

The poster features a computer-generated caricature of a broadly smiling figure resembling Obama standing in front of the U.S. Congress with the ice cream in the foreground.

The strapline reads: “It’s on everyone’s lips — the Dark is in the White!”

“We wanted to make the print amusing and cheerful, just as joyful and pleasant as the process of eating an ice cream,” Yevgeny Primachenko, deputy creative director of Voskhod advertisement agency, told Reuters by phone from Yekaterinburg.

“This is just a vanilla ice cream with a chocolate filling,” Primachenko said. “We decided: why not use such a great news peg as the election of the first black U.S. president to the White House, while showing no political preferences at the same time?”[…]

Alexander Verkhovsky of anti-racism group Sova, based in Moscow, told Sky News: “Violations of political correctness in Russia are clearly acceptable and adverts like this just reinforce ethnic divisions.

Sky News has more:

[…]Alexander Verkhovsky of anti-racism group Sova, based in Moscow, told Sky News: “Violations of political correctness in Russia are clearly acceptable and adverts like this just reinforce ethnic divisions.

“The fact this is a mainstream advert is potentially dangerous – the image is not aggressive in itself – but it can foment prejudice in a more insidious way.”

The company which produced the advert has defended itself, saying the image is not consciously or unconsciously racist.

Voskhod advertising agency said: “We see nothing wrong with this… We believe pointing to race is not racism.[…]

As do I.  The ad does not contain any racist stereotypical imagery. Besides Barack Obama was hailed as the post-racial candidate throughout his campaign (playing the race card all along the way) and whom made history as the first African-American POTUS  (hence the “black in white”?) so what is the harm? Some folks need to get a grip and concern them selves with [real] and [extreme] examples of racist hatred… instead of forming hypothetical possibilities that may or may not stem from the ad.

“For Russia, this is not racist. It is fun and that’s it,” said Gubaidullin, creative director at Voskhod advertising agency, based in the Urals Mountains city of Yekaterinburg.
“We don’t consider teasing ethnic groups racist. It is just seen as a joke,” he said by telephone, adding that he personally liked Obama.
