As secret missions go, this one was a flop.

On Monday morning, one of the 747s used to ferry around the U.S. president was dispatched to the Statue of Liberty, escorted by a fighter jet. Assignment: Get some fresh glamour shots of the plane.

The Air Force said the flight needed to remain confidential. So while New York police knew about it, as did at least one person in the mayor’s office, regular New Yorkers remained in the dark.

As a result, to onlookers Monday all across downtown Manhattan — where the World Trade Center once stood — the photo shoot looked like a terrorist attack. People watched in horror as a massive aircraft, trailed closely by an F-16 fighter jet, banked and roared low near the city, in a frightening echo of the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Fearing the worst, thousands of people streamed out of the skyscrapers and into the streets. Some buildings ordered evacuations. “Oh God, it was mayhem in here, just mayhem,” says Rubin Shimon, manager of Styling Haircutters, a barbershop near Ground Zero. Many people took shelter in the shop to call loved ones on their cellphones.

[snip]

Thousands of workers from Merrill Lynch, American Express and other companies in the buildings that ring the former World Trade Center site hustled for the exits. Many stood outside their offices, nervously looking up into the sky, while hundreds of others walked north, along the West Side Highway, as thousands of people had done the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.

The Obama administration frightening thousands of people who live and work in Lower Manhattan still scarred from 9/11. Why? To update the White House’s photo file . Sure that is a good reason scare the hell out of New Yorker’s and waste tax payers money. Thank God no one was seriously hurt.  There should of been in my opinion a press release announcing  this vanity shot warning New Yorker’s ahead of time. To think other wise is ignorant beyond belief.

Of course NY’s Mayor Bloomberg is steamed. I would be too if I were him and was kept in the dark.

“The good news is it was nothing more than an inconsiderate, badly conceived and insensitive photo op with the taxpayers’ money,” Bloomberg told reporters.

“They should know how sensitive people would be if they had low-flying planes down around the World Trade Center site,” said Bloomberg, adding that he was “furious.”

Update:

Crunching the numbers…

The Hill

It’s hard to know the exact cost without more details of the flight, but a 2006 report by the House Government Reform Committee gives us a clue.

[snip

It reads in part: “This report assumes that flight operating costs are $56,518 per hour for Air Force One and $14,552 per hour for Air Force Two. These figures are based on the perhour cost figures cited by GAO for fiscal year 2000, adjusted for inflation.”

Estimated cost for taxpayers…

It takes about an hour to 90 minutes to fly commercial from LaGuardia to DC. Air Force One flew from Andrews to Newark with a 30 minute detour for the fly by. So between 1.5 – 2 hours flight time, and don’t forget the F-16 (let’s use AF2’s numbers for that):

Air Force One flight to NY: $98,906.50
Photographer in an F-16: $25,466

30 minutes of panic in Manhattan: Priceless.

The audacity of arrOgance raises it’s elitist head once again. 124,372.50 dollars (and that may be on the low end) in tax payer money to replace this shabby photo. Heh.

124,372.50 dollars in tax payer money to provide mementos for “family, friends or supporters” Americans funding Obama Camp 2012? Obama repaying his big donors with a joyride?

Sources said the reason for the stunt was to create souvenir pictures of a customized Boeing 747, which serves as Air Force One when the president is aboard.

Photos of the plane flying over the Statue of Liberty were to be given out to family, friends or supporters.

Question #1:  When will Obama put some “skin in the game“?

Question #2:  How did Obama not know of the AF1 photo-op fly over plans?

CALLER: Well, Rush, you’re accuracy is rate is going up again. I’m a former Secret Service officer and without going into specifics, the idea that Obama didn’t know about this plane being up is just laughable. Obviously, if one of the planes can be used and designated as Air Force One is unavailable, there are all sorts of contingency plans in place for if the president needed to be evacuated from DC — dirty bomb, biological weapons, nuclear attacks, everything. There’s contingency plans for each and every possibility that can arise, and if one of the planes is unavailable, to think that there is no plan and that there was no knowledge that that was unavailable is incredible. Absolutely incredible.

RUSH: Well, it’s not believable. It’s not possible. You’re Secret Service. I didn’t know you guys are allowed to talk after service. I guess that’s why you cannot give specifics?

CALLER: I will not go into specific contingency plans but just that there are plans, obviously, in place.

RUSH: It makes total sense. It makes total sense. The President of the United States is the most at-risk individual any world and he’s the most open. His airplane’s going to be flying up to the Statue of Liberty up in New York for whatever length of time it’s going to be out of service. People have to have contingency plans, as you say, on a daily basis to evacuate him in case there’s any kind of an attack. Meaning he has to be aware, he has to be told this.

CALLER: Absolutely. There are so many plans from what different locations, obviously when he goes out to speak — and Obama travels quite a bit, as we’ve all seen — plans for these specific locations. You know, closest hospital, blood typing, blood matching, emergency evacuation plan. If the weather’s bad, how it’s going to be… I mean, it never ends. The planning never ends, and to say, “Hey, we are caught off guard. We didn’t know that one of the two planes that we typical use is unavailable”? I mean, come on.

Question #3:  Who exactly was on board? The White House should release the manifest, flight plan, the mission order and who requested the mission.

Here is another video of the fly by. Damn near a birds eye view.
