Iran Election Aftermath [Update 7: Fars Province police "authorized to shoot"]

June 14, 2009

I’ll be continuously updating this post throughout the day.

I can not vouch for all reports coming in. The news is flying fast and furious. Neither do I condone all actions expressed in some of the tweet reports. Just posting the news flow. – velvethammer

A damn good video report from the BBC’s John Simpson reporting from Tehran.

Accompanying BBC article here.

Ahmadinejad -Heart of Stone Balls of Brass

Ahmadinejad dismissed Tehran’s worst unrest in a decade as “not important,” comparing it to passions after a football match.

Regime Retaliation:

On Saturday, Mousavi, a 67-year-old former prime minister, released a Web message saying he would not “surrender to this manipulation.” Authorities responded with targeted detentions, apparently designed to rattle the leadership of Mousavi’s “green” movement — the trademark color of his campaign.

The detentions include the brother of former reformist President Mohammad Khatami and two top organizers of Iran’s largest reformist party, the Islamic Iran Participation Front: the party’s secretary-general and the head of Mousavi’s youth cyber campaign. Mohammad Reza Khatami and the two party activists were released Sunday.

Several others linked to Mousavi’s campaign remained in custody, but the full extent of the arrests were not known.

Update III:

More reports of foreign and domestic press being suppressed.

Fox

A spokesman for the Swedish network SVT, Geronimo Akerlund, said its reporter, Lena Pettersson, had been asked to “leave Iran as soon as possible because the elections are over.

German television network ZDF said Sunday on air that its reporter in Iran and other reporters were being “prevented from doing their jobs in a massive form.” The network said it was unable to show a broadcast feed from the network’s correspondent depicting protests.

Italian state TV RAI said one of its crews was caught in a street clash. An Iranian interpreter was beaten with clubs by riot police and officers confiscated the cameraman’s videotapes, the station said.

A newspaper started by the main reformist candidate, Mir Hossein Mousavi, did not appear on newsstands Sunday. An editor, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, said the paper, called Kalemeh Sabz or the Green Word, never left the printing house because authorities were upset with Mousavi’s statements after the elections.

The paper’s Web site reported that more than 10 million votes in Friday’s election were missing national identification numbers, data which make the votes “untraceable.” It did not say how it knew that information.

At his news conference, Ahmadinejad made light of restrictions on the press and media.

Freedom is not when news is censored and appears when the State gives it’s ok.

“Don’t worry about freedom in Iran,” he said. “Newspapers come and go and reappear. Don’t worry about it.”

What a piece of work.

Update IV:

Globe freelancer detained, beaten

I was walking by a checkpoint and an officer grabbed me and forced me onto a motorcycle. As soon as we stopped, I was grabbed from the bike by another officer and slapped me across the head. Seven officers ran up to join in the slapping, and one punched me in the head. A large officer, about 6 foot 4 and dressed in camouflage, grabbed me by the neck, pinching my jugular but not my wind pipe. His leather gloves cut through my skin and I was pinned against a van, my arm bent high behind my back.

My journalist credentials and Canadian passport got me out of the Interior Ministry building, but dozens of others remained in that basement.

Update VI:

The chaos in Iran has not let up. This is real folks. The people are not giving up. Risking their lives to protest.

Basijis’ open fire on protesters report of one shot and killed. Others wounded.

Huge pro-reform rally defies crackdown threats

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad defied an Interior Ministry ban Monday and streamed into central Tehran to cheer their pro-reform leader in his first public appearance since elections that he alleges were marred by fraud. Gunfire from a compound used by pro-government militia killed one demonstrator.

The outpouring in Azadi, or Freedom, Square for reformist leader Mir Hossein Mousavi – swelling as more poured from buildings and side streets – followed a decision by Iran’s most powerful figure for an investigation into the vote-rigging allegations.

Security forces watched quietly, with shields and batons at their sides. But

But an Associated Press photographer saw one person shot and killed and several others who appeared to be seriously wounded in the square. The gunfire came from a compound for volunteer militia linked to Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard.

The chanting crowd – many wearing the trademark green color of Mousavi’s campaign – was more than five miles (nine kilometers) long, and based on previous demonstrations in the square and surrounding streets, its size was estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands.

Update VII:

AP: Police Gen. Ali Moayeri of the Fars Province police told reporters that officers had been “authorized to shoot”. From now on we will respond harshly.”

Update VIII

The Weekly Standard

I talked to a few students in Tehran (Monday morning Tehran time). They confirmed that the attack on their dormitory was brutal, destructive, and the authorities may have taken as many as 100 students with them. In Tehran, one faculty told me, the security forces had thrown some student off a building. There was an attack on a University dormitory in Isfahan as well. A similar episode happened in Shiraz a few nights ago. In last night’s attack, according to an ‘Amir Kabir Newsletter’ (I can send it to any journalist who can read Persian), security forces and others in civilian clothes were brutal: 5 students are reported in critical condition, and three were killed (including a female student).
